Selene (or Luna) stands, full length and nude, pulling drapery around her. She is the Greek goddess of the moon, a predecessor of Diana, the virgin hunter-goddess. Her attribute, a crescent moon, rests upon her head but surprisingly, she was not renowned for her chastity.

Petro della Vecchia, whose real name was Pietro Muttoni, acquired his nickname from his imitation of the old (vecchia). It implies that he was regarded as a copyist of old paintings.
