Alfred Stevens was a native of Belgium but spent most of his adult life in France where his paintings were popular exhibits at the Paris Salon. They showed everyday life, usually fashionable young ladies making visits, reading letters and so on. He was also part of the Paris ‘art scene’ and his friends included Eugène Delacroix and Edouard Manet as well as many of the younger painters. In 1880 Stevens’ doctor recommended he should take the sea air and this is one of the many marine paintings which resulted from that advice. Le Tréport is on the northern coast of France, east of Dieppe.
