A study showing the relationship between the sea and sky, using an unusual format. The eye is led towards the empty horizon, deep blue at the point where it meets the brilliant light in the sky. The depiction of the movement and form of the waves is an important element. The direction of the waves changes from horizontal to diagonal the closer it is to the front of the picture. The nearest wave to the viewer is at an angle to the viewpoint and to the left the paint is impasto thickly applied in short diagonal brushstrokes of light colour to create the impression of froth. The other side of the waves is darker in appearance. The surface of the water is flecked with shades of blue to create the illusion of movement. The sky is also covered with blocks of paint of varying thickness to create the appearance of clouds.
