A sketch showing the effects of waves taken from a low viewpoint close to the water. The artist has concentrated on the method of depicting a wave in the foreground of the painting. The sea is indicated by a series of short brushstrokes of different toning colour. The crest of the wave and the foam on the left are indicated by the use of thick impasto paint. The crest of the wave painted in light shades contrasts with the dark blue of the underside of the wave. The purpose of the sketch was to create the appearance of a wave with a certain painterly effect.
