(b Schweizer-Renecke, Transvaal, 2 Oct. 1894; d Cape Town, 23 Aug. 1966). South African painter. From 1913 to 1920 she studied in Germany, mainly Berlin. She was influenced particularly by Expressionism and was the most important figure in introducing European modernism to South Africa, where her work (mainly figure subjects) initially caused outrage.
