This is a scene from ‘Le Magnifique’, a comedy in three acts in prose and arias written by Michel-Jean Sedaine with music by André Grétry. It was first performed in 1773. The heroine, Clémentine, under a vow of silence indicates the acceptance of her lover's advances by dropping a rose. Her guardian and potential husband-to-be looks on, in the company of Fabio (described in the play as an 'intriguant'); he has agreed to let the Magnifique talk to the young woman for a quarter of an hour, in exchange for a horse, but on the condition that she does not say a word. Eventually everything end well and the Magnifique marries Clémentine. Michel-Jean Sedaine was born in Paris in 1719 the son of a master builder. It is unknown when he started writing but in 1750 he published 'Recueil de pièces fugitives', a volume of fables, poetry, and songs.
