The church at Alkmaar in North Holland appears in at least three other paintings by Ruysdael. This painting, which dates from the end of the artist's life, is a variant of an earlier work in the Szépmüvészeti Múzeum, Budapest, signed and dated 1644, which includes the musicians but omits the girl standing in the pond, guarding pigs.
