This work was previously part of collection of the Storey Institute, Lancaster. The artist was from Bolton. This painting shows a Victorian image of Indian mourners around the body of a woman dressed in white, on steps leading down to the Ganges. There are flowers floating in water, colonnades and palm trees in the background. A funeral pyre for another body is being lit to the left.
