Neilson was born in Kirckcaldy, Fife. She studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, and later Hospitalfield in Arbroath where she met fellow artist Joan Eardley. Neilson was heavily influenced by Eardley and they worked closely together at what was to become known as the 'Catterline School' until Eardley’s death in 1963. Neilson remained at Catterline until the early 1970s and she exhibited regularly in Aberdeen and Glasgow during this period. It is thought this painting is from this period, when she painted a large number of interiors and still lifes.
