This portrait of Sarah was painted whilst she was married to her third and last husband, George Saunderson (1631–1714), 5th Viscount Castleton. She had only been widowed by Thomas, 2nd Viscount Fanshawe, for nine months when she married him in 1674/1675. Sarah’s father, Sir John Evelyn (1601–1685), disapproved of the marriage and left her only five shillings in his will, bequeathing his whole estate to his other daughter, Elizabeth Pierrepont, mother of Evelyn Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston-Upon-Hull. Sarah was buried at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London.
