San Gimignano is the best remaining example of the medieval hill town in Tuscany. Built for defence, the tall towers each belonged to a different family and served as a refuge for the owners and their servants at times of civic unrest. In the 12th century there were 72 towers in all. This is one of a collection of paintings bequeathed to the Gallery by Helen Cochrane. Armfield and Cochrane were friends and both were associated with the early 20th-century revival of tempera painting. Armfield seems briefly to have been her tutor. In his 1958 essay ‘My Approach to Art’, he recalls: ‘We had one lovely interlude, accepting Helen Cochrane’s invitation to visit her at her lovely ‘Rezzola’ above Spezia on the excuse of my teaching her tempera painting….
