He is seated in a chair with elaborately carved wooden armrests, near a chest of drawers upon which are a glass bowl of water, a watercolour palette and paper. In his left hand he holds a painting of a landscape scene. On the wall above the table is a rocky landscape by W. J. Muller, (in Castle collection).
