Prior to his appointment in 1769 as Secretary Samuel More had been an active member of the Society, interested in gem-engraving and die-sinking he won two premiums in 1763 and 1764. His interest in the Society's premium awards continued during his role as Secretary where More saw two of the most important developments in the Society’s history. First was the move to the Society’s Adam House in 1774. Second was the publication starting in 1783 of the Society’s 'Transactions', in which the work of the Society was disseminated to the public. In 1794 he published a paper in the 'Transactions' himself on his idea for a universal measure for length. In the same year he was awarded a Gold Medal from the Society for his 'eminent services'. His importance within the Society is displayed by his inclusion in James Barry's painting, ‘The Distribution of Premiums in the Society of Arts’ on display in the Society’s Great Room.
