Samuel Johnson was a writer, poet, critic and wit, most famous for his Dictionary of the English Language and for his vivacious character. This portrait idealises Johnson to some extent, in contrast to Sir Joshua Reynolds’ more realistic depictions. In portraits, Johnson is usually to be seen in a brown suit. He was not in general careful of his appearance, and would wear the same clothes for weeks on end.
