Samuel Hood entered the Navy in 1741. During the Seven Years War (1756–1763), he served in the English Channel and the Mediterranean. In 1778, he became Commissioner of the dockyard at Portsmouth and Governor of the Naval Academy. He was promoted to rear admiral in 1780 and sent to the West Indies and the coast of North America as second-in-command under George Rodney. On the outbreak of the French Revolutionary War in 1789, Hood was sent to the Mediterranean as Commander-in-Chief. In 1794, by then an admiral, he was recalled to England. He held no further command at sea, but was appointed governor of Greenwich Hospital, a post he held until his death.
