This cast iron statue of Samson was at one time gilded or bronzed. The statue previously stood at the top of the Gaol Square fountain, erected to the memory of Alderman Thomas Sidney, by his widow and unveiled on the 4th of July 1889. Thomas Sidney was Lord Mayor of London (1853–1854). The fountain was destroyed in 1928.
