For many years the Lewis family held a licence permitting the netting of salmon in the restricted area of Porthmadog harbour. This painting depicts the very last drag made by Harry Lewis and Gareth Michael Lewis in the year 2000 before relinquishing their hereditary entitlement. Dwindling stocks of salmon negotiating the Glaslyn rendered the whole exercise totally unviable as a commercial enterprise. The only other licence holder, Robert Jones, carried on for a further two years before he also gave up the struggle when costs far outweighed the rewards.
