Nicolás Borrás was a Spanish historical painter who painted the large altarpiece at the monastery of Ghent, for which he asked as payment to be admitted to the order of monks. He continued to produce more paintings and spent much of his life devoted to decorating the monastery. Saint Roch was a miracle worker who was reputed to bring about cures for disease through prayer, and was often invoked against the plague.
