This is a fragment of a larger painting which showed Saint Paul and Saint Peter either side of the risen Christ. In the original painting, Saint Paul's finger pointed to Christ. The composition was based on a work painted in 1556 by the Dutch artist Antonis Mor (Musée Condé, Chantilly). Another fragment, at Hampton Court, shows Saint Peter but the location of the central section is unknown. Together with the fragment of Saint Peter, this panel with Saint Paul was in the important art collection of Charles I, which was dispersed after the King's execution in 1649.
