The Virgin Mary is seen as an older woman seated on a raised throne. She is wearing a red dress with a blue cloak and there is a halo behind her head. Through the arched windows views of the countryside can be seen. Saint Luke, a young man, is seated at her feet.
Skilbeck was an ecclesiastical artist who was a friend of William Morris and Burne-Jones and, like his contemporaries, designed in a variety of media including stained-glass and metal. He was particularly inspired by Norwegian craft and he frequently visited that country.
