Saint Luis Beltrán was born in Valencia, Spain. He joined the Dominican Order, and served as master of the novices for 30 years. Hoping to be martyred, he asked to be sent to Central America, but he returned to Spain seven years later unharmed. In this painting he holds a cup containing a poisonous snake and renders it harmless by his blessing. In the background, the saint is preaching in either Panama or Colombia.
