Here, rather than in the wilderness, he kneels amongst antique ruins looking at a small crucifix. Although he was never actually made a cardinal, he is often portrayed in cardinal's robes in recognition of an appointment he held under Pope Damascus I. Behind him is his attribute, the lion. According to fable he pulled a thorn from a lion's paw and thereafter the lion became a devoted friend.
