This is one of a pair of late fourteenth-century Florentine panel paintings, probably originating from the Church of St Bartolomeo in Barberino Val d’Elsa, south of Florence. Purchased by the 3rd Earl of Ashburnum c.1800, the two panels were conjoined, only being separated after they were acquired by the Hatton. Research suggests that originally a larger panel showing the Madonna and Child sat between these two panels, this section being housed in the Museo Diocesano di Santo Stefano al Ponte in Florence.
