This painting is based on a statue that Aitchison had of Saint Francis. He has included in the background the triangular mass of Goat Fell on the Isle of Arran, Scotland. This distinctive mountain can be seen from Lamlash, where Aitchison spent childhood holidays. Craigie Aitchison won the first Jerwood Painting Prize in 1994.
