This panel, along with 'Saint Mary Magdalene, Saint Anne with the Infant Mary, the Christ Child and Saint Barbara', originally formed part of a high altarpiece by an unknown German artist, probably commissioned for the church of Bassenheim, near Koblenz. The saints can be identified by their ‘attributes’ or items with which they are portrayed. The first panel shows Apollonia gripping tongs with an extracted tooth, Dorothy of Cappadocia carrying a basket of roses, and an unidentified saint holding the palm of martyrdom.
