This is a study for Thomas Sidney Cooper's 1833 lithograph 'The Tally Man', plate 5 in his series of 6 prints, 'The Hop Ground'. A hand-coloured copy of the lithograph is currently with Marrin's Bookshop, Folkestone. The set of lithographs is very rare (Marrin's have plates 1, 2, 4 and 5; BM has plates 4 and 6, uncoloured; no other examples of the prints have hitherto come to light). The Tally Man has wooden tallies strung across his body. ‘Tallies’ were a foolproof system of counting for hop-picking. They were numbered pairs of flat wooden sticks, one of which was kept by the tally-man and one by the picker. The tally-man would measure and count how many bushel baskets-full had been picked. He would then pair up his half and the picker’s half of the tally stick, and mark a notch across the edge of both with his file.
