Rowland Burdon is pointing at the cast-iron Wearmouth Bridge, built in 1796, which was instigated, sponsored and patented by him. It was built under the direction of local engineer Thomas Wilson, who designed its architectural features. At the time it was the largest single-span iron bridge in the world.
