The objects depicted in this still life might have been chosen to emphasise the brilliance with which the artist suggests different textures and materials such as feathers, moss, petals, carpet or glass. Caught in the reflection of the glass dome are the houses on the opposite side of the street and it is surely a road of mid-Victorian houses. The majority of the buyers of such paintings may well have come from the ever-increasing suburban middle classes. Ellen Ladell's work is only distinguishable from that of her better known husband, Edward, when it is signed, as in this rare instance.
