Using wild, almost violent brushstrokes and a scorching palette, the artist conjures up the rugged landscape of Andalucia, and Ronda’s impressively high bridge perched above the Tajo canyon. Her colours reflect the merciless heat of the summer sun in southern Spain, while the strong presence of red evokes Ronda’s famous bullfighting tradition.

Holt probably painted this landscape while on a painting trip in Ronda with her second husband, the artist David Bomberg, who she met in the 1920s. She was a founder member of the Borough Group (under Bomberg) and later of the Borough Bottega which succeeded it. She discovered Ronda for the first time in 1929. They both painted there frequently before Bomberg’s death in 1957. Holt spent much of her life tirelessly promoting Bomberg's work, only holding her first solo exhibition in 1971 at the age of 73.
