The Rt Hon Lord Cunliffe inherited his title from his father Walter, who, together with his two brothers founded the bank, Cunliffe Brothers. He was Governor of the Bank of England. He was created a Baron in 1914. Rolf Cunliffe was on the board of Guy’s hospital from 1932 to 1963 and acted as Governor, Treasurer and Chairman.

He sits casually, he legs crossed, one hand on his knee the other on the bench to his side. He wears a suit and tie and gazes in to the distance. It is a three-quarter length portrait. Spears has concentrated on capturing the character of his face.
