Roderick Gray entered public life in Peterhead in 1811 as junior Baron Bailie and factor of the Merchant Maiden Hospital of Edinburgh (which owned Peterhead). He became Baron Bailie of Peterhead in 1832 but the office was abolished in 1833 with the passing of the Reform Act. He became Provost of Peterhead in 1843.
