Looking south, this painting captures the full drama of Harris Bay, on the west coast of the island of Rum. The three mile sweep of the rugged coastline, combined with the sheer size of the painting, creates the illusion that one is actually standing on the grassy shoreline hearing the pounding Atlantic surf. Harris was the largest township on the island before the clearances of the late 1820s. As at Kilmory, stark reminders of a once peopled landscape are still to be found in the outline remains of their blackhouses and row upon row of raised earth they fertilised with seaweed and soot-impregnated thatch in order to grow their meagre crops.
