John Theobald’s greatest victory was when 'Rockingham' won the Goodwood Cup in 1835. Ward painted him standing proudly with 'Rockingham' and his jockey, Jem Robinson. Theobald’s passion was racing and breeding horses. In a career of over 35 years he raced more than 40 horses and had at least 22 at stud. These included several of the most celebrated of their day, such as 'Rockingham'. This is amongst the paintings, including a number by James Ward, which came to Brodsworth as a result of the marriage of John Theobald’s granddaughter, Georgiana, and Charles Sabine Thellusson. This painting could have been commissioned by John or his son William Theobald, both of whom appreciated Ward’s work. 'Rockingham' is also depicted at Brodsworth in a painting by J.
