This fine sculpture by Barbara Hepworth, who made St Ives her home from 1939 until her death, welcomes everyone who enters the Library through the main entrance. It was one of three prize winners at the Penwith Society of Arts 1951 Festival of Britain exhibition which was held at the newly opened Penwith Gallery, then in Fore Street. To commemorate the Festival in St Ives funding was found to purchase the work, and it was presented to the St Ives Borough Council. For many years Rock Form was in the Guildhall, outside the Council Chamber on the first floor. When architect Henry Gilbert planned the refurbishment of the library building in 1968, he moved it to where it would be seen by a greater number of people. It was placed on the right-hand side of the main desk, then opposite the recently reopened original entrance.
