Harry Rutherford was born in Denton. In 1911 the family moved to Hyde and after leaving school at fourteen, he trained as a lithographic printer and illustrator. In 1925 Rutherford became Walter Sickert's first pupil at his art school in Manchester. During this time he produced cartoons for newspapers such as the 'Manchester Evening News' before moving to Cornwall and later to London. Returning to Hyde in the 1950s, Rutherford taught painting at the Regional College of Art in Manchester until 1968.
