Full-length portrait of Trotter, wearing a green shooting coat. He holds a cocked gun as he disturbs a bird. His pointer, whose pose is taken from the dog in the print of 'The Spanish Pointer' by Stubbs, works the middle distance while beyond are the Pentlands towering to sublime and romantic heights above a loch.
