The sitter was Viscount Lisle and 1st Earl of Leicester. He was active as a soldier, fighting in battles in support of the Low Countries against Spain. Little is known about the iconography of this portrait. It appears to be the only recorded version of this pose, but probably pre-dates 1605, when Sidney changed his hairstyle and grew a beard to keep up with changing fashions.
