An inscribed plaque accompanying this painting reads: 'Painted by desire of the Gentlemen of the County of Lanark, as a Memorial of the distinguished ability and unwearied attention, devoted by His Lordship, to the affairs and interests of the County. 1867.' A report in a newspaper of 1868 gives details of the inaugural ceremony when the painting was officially presented.
Lord Robert Montgomery Hamilton (1793–1868) is shown wearing the riband and star of a Knight of the Order of the Thistle. Lord Belhaven joined the 26th Cameronian Regiment as an Ensign in 1811 and reached the rank of Lieutenant before transferring to the Life Guards in 1824.
