Robert Loyd-Lindsay was the founder of the British Red Cross. At the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in July 1870, he wrote a letter to 'The Times' calling for the foundation of a national society for the sick and wounded. As a result of Loyd-Lindsay’s initiative, the society known today as the British Red Cross was born at a public meeting in London on 4th August 1870. He was then made the first chairman of the society.

Loyd-Lindsay played a personal role in the distribution of British Red Cross funds at the conclusion of the Franco-Prussian War. After the Franco-Prussian War he continued his involvement with humanitarian causes and politics and was raised to the peerage as Lord Wantage in 1885.
