Eden was Chaplain to William IV and later to Queen Victoria. In 1847 he became Bishop of Sodor and Man. He was moderate in his views, but inclined to High Church practices. When his unmarried brother died, he became the third Baron Auckland. He and his wife Mary had a large family, and his daughters were the first Palace residents to teach the swans to ring the bell when they wanted food. He died at the Palace in 1870 and was buried in the Cathedral Churchyard.
