As in most of the paintings of Jan Wijnants, the landscape, with dunes and silver birches, recalls the scenery near the artist's native Haarlem. On the other hand, the rolling hills in the background and the rustic building evoke Italy, and illustrate his response to the prevailing fashion for Italianate landscapes in Dutch painting. Collaborators often provided the figures for his paintings, and it has been suggested that the figures here were executed by Adriaen van de Velde, who may have trained with Wijnants.
