James H. Morton was born in Darwen on 22 October 1881. He attended Darwen Technical School and later obtained a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, paid for by Mr G. P. Holden of Bank Top Mill, Darwen. Morton worked in oils, watercolours and pastels; he painted many landscapes, particularly of local scenes, as well as of the Lake District, North Wales and Cornwall. In May 1916, conscription was introduced and, at the age of 35, Morton was called up. He joined the 66th East Lancashire Division and achieved the rank of Sergeant. Morton continued to draw and paint but he was tragically killed in action on 6 November, 1918. He lies buried in Row A, grave no. 8 in the Communal Cemetery at Pont-sur-Sambre.
