The Barkers were a family of artists based in Bath from the late 18th century onwards. The most successful of them was Thomas Barker, who, in his youth, was regarded as a significant artistic talent. His brother Benjamin, and his children Thomas Jones, Benjamin and John Joseph all made a living from art.

Landscape was a perennial subject for the Barkers’ paintings. These kinds of pictures, modest in scale and easy on the eye and fashionable in a fairly unchallenging way provided the Barkers with commercial success.
