Lawrence (1896–1969), 11th Earl of Scarbrough, was Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1951 to 1967. In this portrait he is wearing the robes of the Order of the Garter, the highest chivalric order in the United Kingdom. In the background is Lumley Castle in County Durham, the country seat of the Earls of Scarbrough.
