Henry (1882–1947), 6th Earl Harewood, was Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1942 to 1947. In this portrait he is wearing the robes of the Order of the Garter, the highest chivalric order in the United Kingdom, over the uniform of a lord-lieutenant. He held this office in West Yorkshire from 1927 to 1947. Behind him is the standard, or flag, bearing his coat of arms, and in the background are the gardens of Harewood House in West Yorkshire, the Earls’ country seat. Before becoming Grand Master, Earl Harewood was the Provincial Grand Master of Yorkshire, West Riding. Provincial Grand Masters are the Grand Master’s representatives in the Masonic provinces, which roughly equate to counties.
