Arthur (1869–1935), 2nd Baron Ampthill, was Pro Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1908 to 1935. The Pro Grand Master is the representative of the Grand Master when he is unable to attend meetings. Lord Ampthill was Acting Viceroy of India from April to December 1904, and is pictured here wearing that uniform underneath the mantle of a Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of India. This was an order of chivalry founded by Queen Victoria in 1861, and is denoted by the first set of initials (GCSI) that follow Lord Ampthill’s name in the title of the painting. The second set (GCIE) denotes his position as a Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire, another order of chivalry founded by Queen Victoria.
