Richard was the fourth child and third son of Sir Richard Fanshawe and Ann Harrison. He was, tragically, the first of three of their sons to be named Richard. He died of smallpox on 20th October 1659 in Paris. This portrait is thought to be a nineteenth-century reproduction of part of a c.1656 portrait of Sir Richard and his son by Peter Lely. In Lely's portrait Sir Richard stands to the right with his son on the left, and a greyhound at the bottom right.
