Born in Carmarthenshire, William Jenkins Rees (1772–1855), Vicar of Casob, Radnorshire and Prebendary of Christ College, Brecon, was a leader in the revitalisation of the Cymmrodorion Society and the Eisteddfod. The sitter noted 'the view Mr Hughes considered most expressive of my character is a three-quarter face and... he has drawn it with considerable success.'
