Edwin Long was born at Kelston near Bath and settled in London in 1858. He had a highly successful career as a painter of historical subjects and portraits, accumulating enough wealth to commission Norman Shaw to build him two houses in Hampstead. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and was made a full Academician in 1881.
