Reverend John Strain was the Rector at Blairs College from 1858 until 1864. There are three portraits of this man in the collection which suggests that he was rather prominent whilst Rector. He featured in a list of pupils at the former seminary of Aquhorthies, as a student of Latin poetry.

This work may have been executed from a photograph.
